Edward Edinger, Anatomy of the Psyche ____________________________________________________________   (24) Surprising Sun   My wife returned, the days lengthened, the sun came out, and my spirits lifted. I vividly remember a particular day in mid-January, the first day when I felt some kind of hope. This fine day is worthy of a haiku:            A surprising sun            Rising in a cold blue sky            Lightens the birches When I looked at this drawing after completing it, I realized that it was the first one of my images that depicted an external reality.  I understood this to imply that I had finally been able to focus more on the outside world. Now, more than a year later, the drawing also takes on an alchemical significance. Out of the blue, I had chosen to draw four lines and a circle. March 9, 2007
